About Roaches In Atlanta Area

These insects are known for being a highly undesirable pest in the greater Atlanta area. They give off a pungent odor and can reproduce and take over a home fairly quickly. Cockroaches have 3 stages of life egg, nymph and adult.

We typically deal and provide treatments for several species of cockroaches in Atlanta:

American Cockroaches
  • Can grow to be up to over 2 inches long and is the largest cockroach infesting home in Georgia
  • Adults are brown to reddish – brown in color with a yellowish outline to their head shield
  • Both male and female have developed wings and can fly but they are not extreme flyers
  • They have 2 antennae and 6 legs
  • American cockroach dropping identification looks like coarse pepper, dark and cylindrical with ridges and blunt ends
  • Known as the water bug or palmetto bug
  • They live in moist, warm environments near drains and tree cover, shrubs, thick leaf litter and ivy
  • Reducing water sources and spot treatments in activity areas fully control this species
  • They feed on dead organic material, trash, insects, sweets and variety of other foods
  • The American cockroach has a small brown egg capsule called an ootheaca that produces up to 15 embryos
Smoky Brown Cockroaches
  • Around 1 ½ inches in length
  • Adults are shiny and a black, mahogany brown color
  • These cockroaches can fly extreme distances because the length of their wings exceeds the body
  • They have 2 antennae and 6 legs
  • Nymphs have a white stripe on the thorax and the tips of their antenna, making identification of smaller roaches stand out
  • Thrive in moist environment and often found in leaf litter, thick vegetation, gutters, attics and eves
  • Wood repair, cleaning gutters and dusting attics or voids is necessary to prevent nesting
  • Smokey cockroaches eat decaying organic matter, sweets, meat, insects, trash, feces and starches
  • Like other Atlanta roaches, this species is nocturnal
German Cockroaches
  • Adults are ½ inch in length
  • German cockroaches are light brown with two dark horizontal stripes on the shield behind the head
  • 2 antennae and 6 legs
  • Possess wings but typically do not fly
  • They are mostly found indoors in kitchens, bathrooms and areas of moisture
  • Their egg case can contain up to 40 embryos and female will drop it hours before hatching
  • The reproduce rapidly and the nymphs do not need to leave the nest and survive on adult fecal matter.
  • Dusting, flushing, vacuuming and water reduction are the most effective methods of control for German cockroaches
  • Carry a parasite that can be spread to people
  • They can produce a strong and foul odor when infestations are severe
Brown Banded Cockroaches
  • Adults are ½ inch or less in length
  • Brown-banded cockroaches are brown with light bands on the wings and across the body
  • 2 antennae and 6 legs
  • They prefer warmer and dry climates
  • Feed on book bindings, glue and other starches
  • Void, furniture, crack and crevice treatments and vacuuming are optimal forms of control for brown banded cockroaches
  • Attach eggs to the underside of furniture and inside of picture frames
  • Are considered to be more rare in Georgia
