Starlings

Starlings are small birds that are very comfortable living in a variety of environments here in the Atlanta area. While they can be beneficial because they eat many bugs, they can cause problems for homeowners as well. Springtime is when you will start seeing these small birds and when they can begin causing problems. They are usually dark in color and they love small spaces or cavities. Chimneys and vents are some of the most inviting places for them to find shelter or nesting places.

Starlings in Vents

Vents can be another problem area. Every home has several types of vents that are easy for birds to enter. Bathroom exhaust vents, dryer vents and kitchen exhaust vents are the most common. The small spaces make perfect places for nesting. That means nesting materials and the waste that comes along with the birds.

The dryer vent was designed to allow heat and lint to escape. If it is blocked by nesting material and birds the heat can not get through. You might notice your clothing getting extremely hot when drying or needing several cycles to dry. Other exhaust vents with flaps can cause birds to be trapped. They will make a lot of noise trying to get out. It will sound like a larger animal moving around because they cannot fly in the vents.

Starlings in Chimneys

If you are hearing constant chirping noises or fluttering wings in your living space, you may have starlings in your chimney. They can get stuck in the chimney flue, behind the damper or in the chimney cap. Some will build nests inside the chimney and they can even make their way into your fireplace. If a bird gets trapped inside your chimney behind the damper, odds are they will not be able to get out on their own. There is just not enough space for them to fly out so they can die if not helped out.

Nesting materials are a fire hazard so they will need to be removed and changes will need to be made to the chimney to prevent a repeat problem. Whether you need netting, wire or a whole new chimney cap, it is best to have a trained professional make any alterations to your chimney.

Our professionals can inspect these areas and address any potential problems before they arise or trap and remove birds if they are already nesting in your vents. Call us as soon as you think you may have starlings or other birds in your vents or chimney. We can provide cleanup and repair services as well.
